University College School (UCS) is a highly regarded independent boys’ school in Hampstead, valued for its academic strength, breadth of opportunity and inclusive, intellectually curious culture. 11+ is the main point of entry into the Senior School, with competition for a limited number of external places each year.
At Clarendon Tutors, we regularly support families applying for UCS 11+, helping pupils prepare calmly and confidently for the school’s English and maths entrance exams and interview process.
UCS 11+ Entry at a Glance
Each year, approximately 60 places are available in Year 7 at UCS. Boys admitted at 11+ join around 60 pupils who transfer from the UCS Junior Branch, making external entry selective but achievable for well-suited candidates.
UCS prioritises strong foundations in English and maths, intellectual engagement and suitability for the school’s ethos, rather than exam drilling or coaching-heavy preparation.
Visiting UCS
UCS encourages families to get to know the school before applying.
- Open Evenings take place during the Autumn Term and include talks from staff and pupils, followed by self-guided tours.
- Private daytime tours of the Senior School are also available and offer a valuable insight into daily school life.
Visiting the school can help families decide whether UCS is the right fit and allows boys to feel more comfortable ahead of the 11+ assessments.
The UCS 11+ Admissions Process
Application and School Reference
After applications close, UCS requests a confidential academic reference from each candidate’s current school.
Entrance Examinations
All candidates are invited to sit the UCS 11+ entrance exams, held at the school in January.
- English (1 hour 15 minutes)
- Reading comprehension
- Creative writing
- Maths (1 hour 15 minutes)
- Core mathematics
- Problem-solving questions
The exams are aligned with the National Curriculum at the end of Key Stage 2. UCS does not require verbal or non-verbal reasoning papers, and past papers are not provided.
Interview
Based on exam performance and references, shortlisted candidates are invited to interview in late January. This typically includes:
- A short mini-lesson
- A one-to-one interview with a member of teaching staff
Offers are made in mid-February.
Preparing for UCS 11+ with Clarendon Tutors
UCS is looking for boys who are academically secure, curious and able to think independently, rather than those who have been intensively coached. Preparation should focus on depth of understanding, clarity of expression and confidence in unfamiliar tasks.
At Clarendon Tutors, our UCS 11+ support focuses on:
- Strengthening KS2 English and maths foundations
- Developing confident written responses and problem-solving skills
- Supporting pupils with interview confidence and classroom-style engagement
Our approach is measured, personalised and aligned with what UCS genuinely values in its 11+ candidates.
Final Thoughts
With a limited number of external places available each year, UCS 11+ is competitive but grounded. Boys who are comfortable with the core curriculum, curious about learning and ready to engage thoughtfully with teachers tend to perform best in the admissions process.
At Clarendon Tutors, we guide families through the UCS 11+ journey with clear advice and tailored academic support, helping pupils approach the process with confidence and authenticity. If UCS is on your shortlist, early and well-balanced preparation can make a meaningful difference.
