The Marlborough College Admissions Process
Entry into Marlborough College is selective and begins well in advance. Clarendon always advises that families visit the school to get a feel for the campus and the culture. Marlborough starts at Year 9 (called ‘Shell’) but the admissions process starts at Year 6 with the ISEB pre-test. Registration typically occurs several years ahead, and early engagement with the admissions process is strongly advised.
Assessment will be based on four key elements:
- 1. The ISEB Pre-tests – taken at your child’s current school between September to December of Year 6 (Year 7).
- 2. A reference from your child’s current school – requested by us during the Michaelmas Term of Year 6 (Year 7)
- 3. Your child’s performance on assessment day. This will take place at the College in the January of Year 6 (or February of Year 7). The College aims to make the assessment day as pressure-free as possible. There will be a short writing task, some informal and enjoyable interactive group activities and an interview.
- 4.13+ Common Entrance in Year 8. Since students have been offered a conditional offer in Year 6 or 7, it’s unusual for a student to be rejected at this stage, but it can happen. They are mainly used for setting purposes, but if students underperform, it’s possible their place is offered to another student on the waiting list.
Preparing for the Marlborough College at 13+
Preparation for Marlborough College should ideally begin in Year 4 or 5, preparing for the ISEB Common pre-test. This is a rigorous, competitive online test so pupils must practice the 4 key elements: English, maths, non-verbal reasoning and verbal reasoning. Common Entrance exams are an important component of the 13+ process. These typically include a range of subjects, including English, maths, science, humanities and a modern language. Regular practice with past papers, timed exercises, and structured revision plans can help build confidence and familiarity with the exam format.
